“Developmental Consequences of Child Maltreatment”

This one day course will cover normal and abnormal child development, including:
- Research findings on the developmental consequences of physical abuse, sexual abuse and emotional neglect;
- Theoretical models for understanding consequences of maltreatment;
- Intervention strategies and their effectiveness;
- The relationship between developmental consequences of maltreatment and treatment planning.
Participants, especially foster parents, will gain the following skills:
- The ability to conceptualize how a child’s history contributes to current functioning;
- The ability to identify how behavior is shaped by the interplay of developmental tasks and experience;
- The ability to devise care-giving experiences that provides a corrective developmental experience for the child.
